preparations are underway for my show at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum (in Almonte,ON) coming up in October... here's a little sneak peak at a new work for the show: this is half of the word 'Mandarin' in Mandarin, the most spoken language in the world (only 1151 million people, according to this site). Certainly, Mandarin deserves its own pillow.

I took that photo in my studio to make sure the whole word would fit on the shelves...(it does!) and also to make sure I didn't have any pillow 'typos'! If you can't quite recall all the words to the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious song, here's the goodness of a YouTube moment. You will not be able to get the undiddle-diddles out of your head.
I was not able to utilize that awesome crate I made (see previous post) because there was a weight restriction with the shipper that I used. So I had to divi everything up into 4 smaller boxes, which worked well too. It was a frenzied box making session on shipping day, but it turned out rather well in the end. Nothing like using some colourful duct tape to pretty up some boxes :) ...And I'm certain that crate will come in handy in the future.
I am shipping a project out to Calgary's Stride Gallery +15 Window Space next week, so I had to make my very first shipping crate, which may also be all I need for a casket in 'The End'. Peter Shmelzer helped me make the crate. A woodworker is a handy person to know. The project is a very long word made from letter pillows and will be installed on the cute little crown moulding shelves from the Corridor Gallery installation. (Alisdair McRae was the curator for that show and helped me make the shelves, another woodworker, Hourrah! Nothing like playing with a rented compound mitre saw :). The +15 Window Space is situated in the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts, and I'll just say that this word will make you want to sing a little song. The exhibition will run from June 1 to July 31, so if you're in Calgary, go take a look!
I'm getting ready with Skirts and Shirts for Hintonburg's ArtsPark this coming Sunday May 9 (bring Mom, its Mother's Day!) from 10-4. All KBergmans.com clothes are handmade, and one-of-a-kind. I don't use patterns, and just cut on a dress form and sew . Makes for very easy wearing, comfortable and unique fashions. Jason documented my artist talk on saturday at the Corridor Gallery. It went really well, and it was nice to see the video after to get an idea of my presentation skills. The audio and quality of the video were not the best, plus it was 33 minutes, so no one would want to watch a talk that long on youtube. But Jason mastered up a funny little sped-up version with a nice aged effect and cute charlie chaplin music. You will see I talk with my hands A LOT! Thanks J!
I'll be doing an artist talk about my TEXT-ING project, and its current exhibition entitled 26 Letters and Then There Were None, a duo-show with Julie Tucker. The talks will start at 2:00pm at the Corridor Gallery at Crichton Cultural Community Centre, 200 Crichton Street, 2nd Floor (Please use Avon Lane entrance at rear).

The Corridor Gallery proudly presents 26 Letters And Then There Were None, an exhibition featuring Karina Bergmans and Julie Tucker at Crichton Cultural Community Centre, 200 Crichton Street, 2nd Floor, Ottawa. (Please use Avon Lane entrance at rear.)
Karina Bergmans and Julie Tucker present a multimedia exhibition that plays with language, learning and the institutional setting where we receive instruction. The artists incorporate playful notions of the alphabet, nursery rhymes and arithmetic with architectural facets, historical fragments and the eerie lure of our own connection to the past through memory and ghosts. Implicitly raising questions around the objects and the site in which they are located, there are no reassuring answers. While early childhood education gives us the tools to process our experiences, we are left to our own devices to decide how to use them.
This show is the second of two juried exhibitions that will be presented by the Corridor Gallery this season. The Gallery is operated by the Crichton Cultural Community Centre and its mission is to provide opportunities to emerging professional artists living and working in the region.

I found my friend Tania's beautiful children's book Willow's Whispers at my local ottawa chapters. I had to find a corner of the store and read it immediately. Tania did the illustrations and a Lana Button wrote the text. It is a really lovely story and Tania's illustration are really adorable. (I especially like Willow's socks, and change of wardrobe in the second half, and the Teacher is very teacher-ish)
Tania always puts in a sweet little kitty (and this one was in quite a few 'scenes'!)
and in a bold move, I added some books to the *New and Hot* for 3-5 yr olds table (at the back of the table), only to discover that there was already a great big pile on the table already! Congratulations Tania!!!
I'm hoping my new Thinking Caps will help with me generate some new ideas this month.
I had a great time at the opening of the Ontario Crafts Council Body + Object exhibition last week. It was a busy night.

The Montreal Centre for Contemporary Textiles "presents bracelets, armlets, cuffs and more objects that embellish the arm. Some of the artworks are jewels that decorate originally an arm, others constitute a comfortable, unique and rebel sleeve. The exposed artworks are produced through various techniques of textile construction."

The Colon Carry All and the H1N1 Handbag will be exhibited in a group show entitled Body + Object Exhibition at the Ontario Crafts Council Gallery at 990 Queen St in Toronto. The show runs from January 5th to the 31, with a vernissage on January 20th from 5:30 - 8:30. The Council is a participant in the Toronto International Design Festival and examines "the relationship between the body and the many forms in which it can ornament, present and represent itself."

I've made a photo album of pics from the exhibition of sleeves at the Centre Contemporain de Textiles de Montreal. It is quite a nice show to be in, and such a beautiful table full of sleeves.
In keeping with the show that's opening tonight (Magical Dreamworld at LPM Gallery), my cat Pandora has been having a magical dreamworld of her own. For three days in a row this week, she has been consistently burrowing under a pile of blanket on various beds in the house. Its too cute. Maybe one day she can have her own YouTube channel and book like my fav internet cat Maru from Japan.
